Greek political turmoil continues

Greek prime minister George Papandreou’s tenure looks increasingly fragile as reports suggest that three MPs from the ruling party would abstain in a vote of confidence.

A vote of confidence in the Greek parliament is to take place on Friday, November 4, however, the slim majority held by the government could be lost if the three votes are not counted.

Earlier, finance minister Evangelos Venizelos spoke out against a referendum and has since been joined by other Greek cabinet members.

The referendum announced earlier this week has thrown the eurozone plans to resolve the sovereign debt crisis into disarray.

Since the announcement, it has been suggested that the referendum will question Greece’s membership in the European Union rather than its acceptance of the bail-out package.
