Afternoon markets: Vedanta powers to top of FTSE 100
Miner Vedanta Resources was the biggest riser at the close of trading as the FTSE 100 rallied to just short of 5,800 at the end of the day.

The blue chip index rose after comments from the Federal Reserve suggested it would keep interest rates at close to 0% until 2014.
The FTSE 100 closed at its highest level for months, reaching 5,795 at the end of the session.
The index was buoyed by Vedanta’s strong performance, which saw its share price increase by 8.7% to 1,252p at the close of trading.
It was joined at the top by precious metal miner Polymetal International, up 7.8% to 1,152p, while copper miner Kazkahmys rose 7.3% to 1,194p and gold miner Randgold Resources increased by 5.1% to 7,170p.
Lloyds Banking Group was the highest non-mining climber, with share price up 6.1% to 32.82p.
The biggest faller was cruise operator Carnival, which dropped 2.2% to 1,901p. It was joined at the bottom by business software company Sage Group, which fell 1.3% to 301.2p.
Supermarket chain Morrisons dropped 1.2% to 292.1p, Hargreaves Lansdown was down 0.6% to 419.3p, while Imperial Tobacco slipped 0.4% to 2,253p.
