FTSE 100 CLOSE: Weir surges as index closes at 2012 high

Engineer Weir Group was the biggest riser at the end of the day’s trading as the FTSE 100 index closed at a 2012 high of 5,945.

The FTSE 100 engineer saw its share price surge by 6.6% to 2,186p, and was joined at the top by Vedanta Resources, up 3.5% to 1,358p.

Also on top at trading’s close was insurer Aviva, increasing by 3.4% to 382.6p, Royal Bank of Scotland Group closed 3.2% higher at 28.48p, while BHP Billiton climbed 2.7% to 2,077.5p.

The biggest faller at the end of the day biopharmaceutical company Shire, which dropped 1.1% to 2,252p.

Food products company Tate & Lyle shed 0.9% from its share price, down to 701p. Imperial Tobacco Group shed 0.8% to 2,500p, Severn Trent dropped 0.7% to 1,540p, while United Utilities also slipped 0.7% to 604.5p.
