Morning markets: Fresnillo on top as investors flock to miners

Miners – and in particular precious metal miners – were the most popular stocks in early trading as Mexican silver miner Fresnillo led the way.

Fresnillo was up 2.9% to 1,793p, followed by Randgold Resources, which increased by 2.6% to 7,000p (at 0803 GMT).

Rio Tinto also rose 2.6% to 3,806p, while precious metals and chemicals specialist John Matthey was up 2.1% to 2,053p, as was BHP Billiton which increased to 2,173p.

Microchip manufacturer Arm Holdings was the biggest faller with share price dropping by 1.3% to 590p (at 0804 GMT).

British Sky Broadcasting, Essar Energy and Imperial Tobacco all dropped by 0.5% to 669p, 135.3p and 2,252p, respectively.

Financial Times publisher Pearson also slipped early on, down 0.3% to 1,176p.
